“Viola” – beyond the color

Fabio Pesce

“Viola” is a short film written, directed and edited by Antonio Fraioli, clarinetist, composer and teacher.
Recently screened as part of the Clarinet South Festival 2015 (csfestival.eu) presents interesting ideas and considerations on the meaning of the creative act, a balance of opposing elements that give life to masterpieces, reflections and long pauses, apparently useless, which suddenly take on an artistic sense. Symbology of idleness as an intellectual pursuit, otium Latin in its entirety.
One last thing before leaving the word to the author, the protagonist is also called Purple, but it's a trap, don't fall for it!

Antonio Fraioli:
The blue color is a symbol of harmony, balance and calm, it represents the ability to use time without worries.
Il Red it describes the impetus directed towards the conquest, the result, the mobilization of all the energies that can turn into counterproductive extreme speed, into anxiety. But the speed can still lead to the result just when it manages to interact with calm, with reflection, with extended times.
The purple color, which is obtained by mixing blue and red, seems to perfectly describe the possibility of balancing apparently distant approaches to life, of making speed and slowness interact.

The meanings attributed to colors and music are, together with the actress who plays a composer looking for inspiration, protagonists of the short film.

“Viola” (in English “Purple”) is a short film written, directed and mounted by clarinetist, composer and teacher Antonio Fraioli.
Screened in Italy during the Clarinet South Festival 2015 (csfestival.eu) it contains interesting considerations about the meaning of the creative process, balance of opposing elements giving birth to masterpieces, long apparently unnecessary pauses suddenly turning into artistic sense. It's the idleness symbolology as brain storming, the Latin “otium” in its original meaning.

Just one last thing to say, the main character's name is “Viola”, it's a trap, don't fall into!

Antonio Fraioli:
The color Blue it is the symbol of harmony, balance and calm, representing the ability to use time without rush.
The color Red  describes momentum towards the conquest, the sum of all the energies turning sometime in extreme counterproductive speed, anxiety.
The rapidity itself can lead to the goal when it interacts with calm, reflexion, relaxed times.
The Purple color, obtained mixing blue and red, seems perfectly describing the possibility of balancing apparently far ways of life, interacting speed and slowness.
The meaning of colors and music, together with the actress playing the role of a composer in search of inspiration, are the protagonists of the movie.

In the beginning of the movie, Viola reads a letter from her friend Stefania asking her to write a new composition for solo clarinet.

The text written in the the end the movie says:

"Among Chuang-tzu's many skills, he was an expert draftsman. The king asked him to draw a crab. Chuang-tzu replied that he needed five years, a country house, and twelve servants. Five years later the drawing was still not begun. “I need another five years,” said Chuang-tzu. The king granted them. At the end of these ten years, Chuang-tzu took up his brush and, in an instant, with a single stroke, he drew a crab, the most perfect crab ever seen.”
