80'S Gated Snare

Antonio Campeglia

Gated Reverb is a technique that was used a lot in the 80's and became a sort of sound signature of Phil Collins' drums; this does not mean that it is an outdated technique!

Although it has been attributed to Phil Collins it is actually a technique that was born almost by chance in Peter Gabriel's studies.

Legend has it that during the recording sessions of Peter Gabriel's Intruder piece, the sound assistant had patched the send of the drum reverberation in a stereo channel where a noise gate. As the drums were tuned and miked, in the control room the producer Steve lillywhite and the sound engineer Hugh Padgham they heard this fabulous reverb sound being 'cut' abruptly by the noise gate.
As noted, Phil Collins was the drummer chosen to play on this third solo album by Peter Gabriel; Collins 'borrowed' the gated reverb technique (as well as sound engineering!) For his first album. The song In the air tonight it became a worldwide hit and the drum sound became Phil Collins' trademark and that's why everyone credits him for creating gated reverb.
