Umberto Sorbo

DrumLine is part of the Originals collection created by Spitfire Audio in collaboration with Bleeding Fingers.

Founded by Hans Zimmer, Steve Kofsky and Russell Emanuel, Bleeding Fingers Music has put together several composers, each with unique and complementary characteristics to each other to create superlative compositions for the movies and tv.

Hans Zimmer and his team

And right Russell Emmanuel made the recordings of this library at the Newman Stage of 20th Century Fox. All the musicians are part of the Blue Devils.

Blue Devils

It is the most decorated body in the history of Drum Corps International (DCI), Indianapolis, Indiana government institution for percussion and trumpet formations, which is responsible for developing and applying the rules of competitions held in the United States and Canada.

The Blue Devils have finished in the top five for over XNUMX years and have won the DCI World Championship title more than any other group with musicians aged between 17 and XNUMX years.

The Blue Devils

They also have an independent group of Majorettes (baton twirlers) with whom they participate in demonstrations around the world.

To breathe a bit of the atmosphere of this bookshop I recommend you to see the film "Drumline"Distributed by 20th Century Fox.

The library

As I said, the library was registered at the Newman Stage of XNUMXth Century Fox, the same place where the music of “The Mandalorian" and "The Lion King” as well as many other soundtracks.

The room selection was dictated by the percussive nature of the sounds.

The composer Newman in the Pixar movie " Monster University” used Blue Devil to give his music that particular, decidedly collegial sound.

There are sounds of snare drums, tenor drums/bass and dishes.

Compared to other types of percussion, these have a different sound from those usually used in other musical genres, as they are designed to be used outdoors in large spaces.

20th Century Fox

Drumline has a much more punchy almost "military" sound and is organized in eleven presets ready to use percussion both in Ensemble and with single sounds, rolled, crescendo and diminuendo in 3 different lengths.

As with any Originals library, you can adjust the sound in duration and dynamics.

As for the position of the microphone, they are available:

- Close: a blend of spot and overhead microphones,  for a defined and punchy sound

- Room: A mix of Decca Tree, Outrigger and ambient microphone array to record the sound produced  by the controlled acoustics of 20th Century Fox's Newman Stage

- hyped: the original samples but modified in pitch and duration, with the addition of compression, saturation and EQ to add weight and sonic impact.

Conclusions

  • Drumline is a library that offers the sound of the American marching band typical of sporting events.
  • There are other libraries of this genre, but this library offers the unique sound sampled from one of the most famous Drum Corps: Blue Devils.
  • Possible uses can also extend to those who want to make a rhythmic track more incisive and you will find many examples in this regard in Hip Hop and Pop.
