The surprise teaser launched last Friday created hype, leaving us full of curiosity and expectations. After 4 days of waiting Presonus reveals: Studio One 5 is now available!
The DAW that for years was considered a rookie among the giants of digital audio production is now standing tall with a new version which, as always, has the priority to satisfy the requests of users.
One of the most famous peculiarities of the Baton Rouge software is in fact that of taking inspiration for its upgrades from the forum that Presonus makes available, with the possibility of voting most desired features.
So what's new in Studio One 5?
The two main features are definitely the integration of a music notation software (score view), with the possibility of combining it with the classic MIDI editor, and the show page. The latter is presented as an interesting novelty that takes the concept of session view of Ableton Live to expand it enormously. On the show page, a new type of project created for live performances, it will be possible to import tracks and plugins from songs, manage real instruments together with vst, create playlists and control every aspect of the live music event. In an age of digital production, let's think about how often musicians need to bring sound created in the box to the stage! The Presonus team claims to have worked hard on routing, to streamline the workload on the machine and reduce unnecessary processes, thus ensuring maximum reliability, essential in a “live” situation such as a concert.
Studio one 5 is also enriched with the possibility of saving and recalling an entire mixing scene (mix recall), including IN / OUT settings, volumes, pan and insert effects, and with the function gain envelope, which allows us to "write" the gain directly on the track like any other automation, to have total control over transients and syllables pronounced too loud or too softly (the dialogue editors thank you).
The native plugins have been updated in appearance and also in functions. For example, the new Pro EQ features a lowcut filter with linear phase and a spectrum analyzer with corresponding keyboard to help us find the notes corresponding to annoying resonances.
Next to the master bus we now have the possibility to add another bus for a second listening, the ListenBus, directed to different monitors, or for use with room calibration plugins such as Sonar Works Reference without affecting our mix, with the possibility of Pre-fade Listen or After-fade Listen.
The new ones also need to be explored AUX Channels, which promise to integrate the physical instrumentation into the songs in a faster and more intuitive way, saving the real synths in the browser as if they were vst.
Another feature much requested by users and added in Studio One 5 is the track in time management tapemode, that is slowing down or speeding up the song accompanied by relative pitch shift, as well as the possibility of finally managing the keyswitches separately, so they are not edited or transposed along with the notes.
All these and many other features are added to the already known and loved features of the Presonus DAW, such as zero latency monitoring, console shapers to make the mixer more like an analog console, the drag and drop total, a type of project exclusively dedicated to mastering, fx routing customizable and perfect integration ARA (in the Professional version is included Melodyne Essential)
Studio One is available in Prime, Artist and Professional versions, with the possibility of upgrading from version 4 and discounts for crossgrade if you have another DAW.
Before concluding its big announcement in the live on 7 July, the launch of Presonus Sphere, a new service with monthly or annual subscription (approximate price € 15 per month or € 165 annually), thanks to which it is possible to rent Studio One 5 with the addition of all its Add Ons, acquire a space of cloud storage from 30GB (with upgrade to 100GB for about € 4 more per month) and become part of a community in which to exchange stems and entire projects, perfect for collaborations. Presonus also promises exclusive content for its subscribers.
The path of Studio One is now clear: finding a balance between innovation, necessary in a crowded and sometimes saturated world like that of digital, and the simplest but effective thing ... listen to those who use the software!
