Bud Spencer blues explosion - Do it

Alfonso Senatore

An incessant live activity and an assiduous record production consisting of 3 CDs and an ep in 5 years: from here BSBE starts, ready to return to the air with "Do It", or Dio Odia I Tristi, a clear invitation to do something to be more cheerful. How? Let's try to listen to them ...

The opening slide chosen by Adriano Viterbini and Cesare Petulicchio is a perfect springboard, 16 seconds of suspense and then the explosion! "More than the minimum"Sling directly into the full sound in" Bud Spencer style ", a blow between head and neck," Zeppelian "guitar and drums as essential as they are convincing, a voice that manages to be pleasantly catchy. All this, however, lasts until 01:36, the moment in which the duo reminds the listener that BSBE give their best live: the demonstration is the staging of a mini concert, an up-and-down among the cornerstones. rock reinterpreted in a Viterbini key. The rhythm is incessant, a continuous evolution that even touches metal sounds, so as not to miss anything. The piece makes it hard to finish, as if not wanting to disappoint the listener, perhaps already absorbed and amazed in front of these roller coasters.

"Toys"Is the most natural continuation: slides and sticks on the edges unleash the energy due, in an inevitable succession of ideas that intertwine in a modern rock piece complete with stops around every corner and winking melodies: Who has fun more, here , perhaps it is precisely the instruments, which with an innate spontaneity ask to be able to continue to "go crazy" ("have fun", but the Neapolitan dialect gives a good idea).
In "I'm looking for your breath”The sound, now more seated, is characterized by the presence of a rhodes, managing to acquire more classic connotations where the electric guitar is almost a guest in a radical context that associates the dirt of blues origins with a choral atmosphere.
"Scraps”Is a bomb placed in isolation, defused just before exploding: the power of the sound is millesimated in the touch of Viterbini, who seems not to want to bother the neighbor despite the stereo ball. It could have been a classic grunge riffettone, but it is these choices that make the Buds something that manages to be easily appreciated, although you can write down a long list of “this reminds me of that”.

The electric goes to rest a couple of minutes in the reinterpretation of the classic "Jesus on the mainline”, Stuff that at least you can imagine Viterbini in a rocking chair, complete with a millennial beard and 40 years more, with who knows what experiences to tell, but instead the years are much less (things to say definitely no).

"Scratch explosion”Is the parenthesis of a blues disk jockey, perhaps deserving of more space. Scrolls away "God hates the sad ", without leaving the desirable imprinting of the title track, resulting at this point of the album almost a bit grumpy ... But it goes quickly, in practice "Like a sea”, Next track. The lights become soft, the dynamics are soft and relaxing, the blues context does not stop pulsing, but in a more discreet way, putting itself at the service of the vocal melody, which when it wants to demonstrate that it can do excellent things. The rhythmic shock is inevitable, which comes even when you don't expect it, but everything is kept on a subtle balance, you dance but you don't "poga", so to speak. The voice is raised again with "The wave”, At least musically speaking. The rhythmic base is one of the rocky ones, but the voice simply pretends not to notice it and outlines a melodic line at the limit of pop. The combination works great and, although it is particular, it even makes us imagine a Vasco Brondi rock (I don't want fans of both sides). "Loudspeaker"Is a mix of songwriting attitude, inserts in full 90s style and blues atmospheres, here too a 1000 special makes his appearance, and even if now he's there waiting for him, like the soldier returning from the war, for at least 2 minutes, you can still get out with a smile on your face.

"Burgers in love", Revision of the piece already contained in" Happy "(2007), anticipates the closure left to"I will fall asleep”, Which, preventing a few yawns, sends us into Morpheus's arms with a drawl lullaby, bluesman stuff with several corns on the fingers.

Until now, Bud's records were a sort of illustrative sheet for what would later be the live, because Buds are, as initially said, live animals. It is too difficult to capture the essence that they manage to express live, the fingers held on the guitar, the sweat, the broken sticks, 2 people playing like a big band, all this boxed in compact disc format: yet "Do It”He tries harder than his predecessors, often succeeding very well. The points in favor are innumerable, starting above all from the modernity of the stylistic choices: I am convinced that 99% of the musicians, having the same variety of riffs as Viterbini available, would not be able to propose anything other than trite and old stuff. But what glitters is not all gold, the excessive variety proposed by the duo, while staging this “bagged concert”, may turn out, to a generation accustomed to very easy listening, excessively redundant, as well as offering itself as a courageous choice. Another side that does not fully convince are the vocal melodies, in continuous evolution, and often well chosen (see "The Wave"), but which seem, in some places, still latent of that leap in quality that can make BSBE appreciate to every ear, whether it is this lover of Mississippi or of the Berlin clubs like "Paul Kalkbrenner". Defects that however are destined to be a needle in a haystack, in a more than rosy context: in the end, Bud Spencer Blues Explosion are these, take it or leave it?

Until next time ... Alfonso Senatore
