Within a very short time Arturia releases the first update for iMini (version 1.1). We find out the details of such implementations the owners of the Mini Moog app version can enjoy .
From the changelog available at Arturia website, and on the App Store pages we can read the features of this update:
- Audiobuses: connect iMini to GarageBand and other DAWS.
- Audio background: iMini responds to midi even in the background.
- virtual midi: iMini responds to other apps that send midi.
- Ignore midi devices: select which midi devices not to respond to.
Some of the shortcomings of the first version of iMini (1.0) that had been highlighted in our previous one review, were taken into consideration by Arturia, who made the app even more competitive.
The choice to add support to the protocol audio bus certainly allows you to use iMini with a greater number of apps (among which GarageBand, Cubasis certainly stand out). On the pages of the Audiobus website we can find the'list of apps compatible with this protocol.
With this update it is possible to use the app in background, an implementation that inevitably ties into adding support Virtual Midi. Taking advantage of the latter two features, it is possible to use an app that supports midi out and send midi signals to iMini, running in the background. What has just been said also applies in the case in which midi messages are sent from a computer (Ableton, Logic, Cubase etc ..) to multiple apps running on the same iPad.
The latest implementation, Ignore midi devices, allows you to select which midi devices to connect the iMini to. This list shows both any apps (with support for midi out) running, and any midi connections (wireless or usb) to a computer or hardware device.
In the next update would be appropriate to be able to handle the midi channel. In version 1.1 you still can not select a specific MIDI channel and all traffic traveling on All Channel, thus not allowing easy placement of this app in a context of a sequencer that controls multiple synths (hardware, software or app.)
